Hung Window Parts

Both single and double hung windows use a variety of parts for proper operation. Please use the below guides to help you identify what you may need to adjust or replace.

Double hung - both upper and lower sashes move up and down.

​

​

Single hung - upper sash is non operable in a stationary fixed position while the lower sash moves up and down.

Balances

Mechanism in the side portion of the hung window that provide the up and down movement of the sashes. Some types of these include tube, block and tackle (channel), coil, constant force, and cross bow.

Tilt Latches

Mechanism in the top of the lower sash that will disengage the top portion of the sash from the balance to allow it to tilt in for easier access to the exterior of the window to allow for easier maintenance and cleaning.

Sash Locks

Mechanism in the top of the lower sash that will engage with a keeper on the upper sash to provide a secure closer of the window to keep the upper and lower sashes in a fixed position to prevent operation.

Sash Pivot

Latch that holds the operable sash in place vertically in the jamb liner. This tilt latch when compressed will allow the sash to perform the tilt motion to allow for cleaning and maintenance.

Ventilation Stop

Mechanism in the top of the lower sash that will engage with a keeper on the upper sash to provide a secure closer of the window to keep the upper and lower sashes in a fixed position to prevent operation.

Sash Carriers

 

Mechanism in the side portion of the hung window that the sash pin or bar rests in that connects the sash to the balance. This will guide the up and down movement.
